The Oscars 2018
The 90th
Academy Awards are around the corner and all the nominees for this year's
Oscars are work of outstanding artistry and skill. Well, there has already
been a lot of talk in regard to which movie is going to win the Best Picture
or which actor or actress will get his or her hands on the golden statuette yet
I would like to add a few points of my own.
Best Picture:
Flawless, magnificent and thought-provoking, all
the pictures in this category are the manifestations of the highest quality
cinematic work. The Shape of Water, with its own interpretation of positive
emotional bonding coupled with the political dimensions, seems to be one to
emerge as victorious in this category. But, for me, if any picture deserves the
Award more than all the nominees then it's the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing,
Missouri. A mother's quest for finding his daughter's killer mixed with the
idea of 'love's stronger than hate' is a true cinematic masterpiece. Moreover,
the way the writer and director Martin McDonagh has worked out the things in
this picture, it'd be sad to see this picture not winning the Award in this
category.
Best
Director:
It took almost seven years for Christopher Nolan
to be again nominated for this category. Technically, Dunkirk is the soundest
picture and it's very likely to win the Award in this category. For me,
The Shape of Water is the real competitor in this category. Director Guillermo
del Toro has created an ever-lasting impression on the viewers through his
great work. Also, Paul Thomas Anderson's work in Phantom Thread is quite incredible but it's very likely that Nolan will finally get his hands on the
Oscars but Del Toro is the one to look out for.
Best Actor in
a Leading Role:
Well, there must not be a debate in regard to the
winner of this category because Gary Oldman's Portrayal of Winston
Churchill is only second to Daniel Day Lewis’ rendering of Abraham Lincoln
in 2012’s Lincoln. As we know that DDL won the Best Actor that year, it’s
highly unlikely that Gary Oldman will not repeat the feat. In addition to that,
the only two nominees in this category who seem to be the tough competitors for
Oldman are DDL and Denzel Washington. DDL in Phantom Thread has again given a
performance that would not be possible if attempted by another actor. Also,
Denzel Washington showed it again that he would never settle himself in the
same kind of roles and will keep on indulging himself in diverse tasks. But
still I believe, it’d be Gary Oldman, going home with the golden statuette.
Best Actress
in a Leading Role:
If it was up
to me, I would not hesitate a bit to give it to Frances McDormand for her powerful
performance in the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. She was at her
very best in the picture and the way she carried the role of a mother with unwavering
determination for finding her daughter’s killer, I think she deserves the Award.
She is already an Academy Award Winner for her performance in Fargo in 1997 and
I can’t see her not adding another to her CV. Although all the actresses in
this category have given extraordinary performances such as Saoirse Ronan in
Lady Bird and Sally Hawkins in The Shape of Water yet for me, Frances McDomand’s
Mildred Hayes role is at the top of the pile.
